Photoquai was designed by the Quai Branly Museum as a contemporary biennial dedicated to non-Western visual arts. Its purpose has raised the interest of the institutions located along the Seine. They were approached by the Quai Branly Museum to be partners of the first edition of Photoquai.
For the first edition 2007 - which combines outside exhibitions promenade to silver prints display within institutions, as well as forums and workshops, the heart of the project lies mainly between the Eiffel Tower and the Pont de l 'Alma.
The Seine is the core symbolic anchor of the event; in accordance with the "popular" nature of the event, Photoquai proposes, along with exhibitions scheduled within partner institutions, street exhibitions, free of charge to the general public, on the docks the Seine along the Quai Branly museum. These exhibitions are the heart of Photoquai, and make the link between the different institutions.

This series of very large images testify of the original glaze that the artist focuses on childhood, through an exploration of "what children do with their mouths". Respected figure of photography in New Zealand, Anne Noble talks about his work as an "alternative" archeology. Dedicated to the artist's daughter, Ruby, the series of forty photographs has been unveiled to the public in New Zealand, Australia, Germany and Spain. Thanks to a scale voluntarily disproportionate to the apparent banality of the subject, the use of contrasting colors and that direct flash, the artist seeks to emphasize in an unusual manner details of a body part, the mouth, in its many functions symbolic food, speech, language, and so on.

The museum maibtain among its collections of old photographs a set of particularly outstanding daguerreotypes, some of which were shown at the "D’un regard l’Autre" exhibition. Moved to the West Gallery next to "Ruby's Room", another photographic exhibition consisting of large colorful prints, The Daguerréotypes plays on contrast of formats, colors, and technology - proposing a fugitive image through perceived reflection. This exhibition will present more particularly daguerreotypes made in East Africa by Charles Guillain, frigate captain, between 1846 and 1848.

The Quai Branly Museum owns one of the 17 portfolios made by Walker Evans, for the African art exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1935. It is one of the few portfolios in this series in the world yet complete, which contains a selection of statues and masks (477 images).
With Photoquai, the Pavilion Sessions visitor will be able to see those outstanding images side by side with masterpieces that have inspired them, or objects that are close enough.
Photoquai « Forum »Debates, exchanges, meetings with artists, videographers, agencies and international festivals from China, Latin America, Africa… At the Claude Lévi-Strauss theater, the following activities will be debated: on the one hand, the question of commited images vs. anthropological gaze. Humanitarian approach - and, secondly, the existence of alternative structures for image broadcast.

Photoquai "studio" This year, the School of Architecture in Paris (ESA) will present the work of his students, from Jerusalem, Melbourne, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Singapore, Wellington. Leurs homologues français, en échange eux aussi pour un semestre, serviront de relais au projet dans les écoles partenaires de l'ESA à travers le monde. Their French counterparts, also in exchange for a semester, will serve as a relay to the project in ESA partners schools throughout the world. A project with the "National Higher School of Photography" in Arles (ENSP) and "Les Gobelins", the image school is underway for future editions of Photoquai.
