RINEKE DIJKSTRA:"Park Portraits" until January 19th,2008 at the Marian Goodman Gallerie

Following a fantastic traveling retrospective of her work, Rineke Dijkstra has recently unveiled her latest project - a new series of portraits of young people photographed, in city parks of the world, in which the artist's lens majestically captures life and the nuances of timeless rites of passage, and of identity, in medias res, an updated, modern album of magical woodland creatures. 'Park portraits', on show at the Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris, include images of schoolchildren and adolescents engaged in the rituals of their daily life, whether it be playing, socialising, resting, thinking, in city parks in Europe, China and the United States.

It's interesting that of all the portraits, varied as they are in focus and expression, not a single one is in what is known as a 'portrait' format. Using the lush framework of traditional landscape in a seemingly offhand manner echoes part of the sense of Dijkstra's latest images of youth - the natural and inevitable merging of two subjects, both personal and universal, which are in a state of constant change, and for which there is a longstanding artistic fascination to converse with and overturn. Writing about the park portraits in a Dutch daily newspaper during the time of the Stedelijk show, Kees Keijer wrote: 'Dijkstra let go of her former austerity and photographed four young people in Amsterdam during a "Dejeuner sur l'herbe anno 2005". Again the work is frontal, but now the pose is relaxed. The surroundings in Dijkstra's work used to be extremely sober; now, candy wrappings and empty soft drink bottles are lying about. A gaping rucksack zipper offers a nearly symbolic perspective on a different reality: one of homework, commitments and expectations for the future. But they don't want to think about that just now'.

The new body of work is slightly more playful than Dijkstra's previous, rather more austere series documenting the rites of passage of adolescence and childhood, from the 'Beach Portraits' of 1992, to the video installation 'Buzzclub/Mysterworld' (1996-1997), the 'Tiergarten Series' (1998-2000), 'Israeli soldiers' (1999-2000), and the single-subject portraits in serial transition: 'Almerisa' (1994-2005), 'Shany' (2001-2003) and 'Olivier' (2000-2003). In 'Park portraits', the portrait seems to shape the subject's possession of their own identity, now performing for us in a new, uncontrollable theatre of characters, safe in the comfort of their favorite spot.

This exhibition is presented by the galerie du Lucernaire within the « Le 6ème, ateliers d’artistes » open doors week in Paris.

Paul Muse is born in England in 1960. Photographer since he is eleven year old. After some litterature, Photo and cinema studies, he briefly worked in advertising before leaving the country for a two year stay in Sudan, then Portugal for 3 years. Moving to Paris in 1990, he since devoted himself to street photography and published his first solo exhibition in 1996. Since the summer of 2006, he works on the "Today" project, a daily newspaper in pictures and words, published on his website.

Frances Ryan settled down in Paris after years spent wandering around the world. It is only when she discovered the work of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston she decided to work exclusively in black and white. She runs through Paris, her city of adoption, to share with us the hidden secrets and her personnal vision of the city.

After studying Spanish litterature and Art History in Madrid and Paris, Laurence Toussaint worked for about 10 years at the contemporary art library Artcurial. Passionate for photography, she specialized in gardens and landscape and illustrate books about the wonders of nature.

Signes / Signs Mark Power's first solo exhibition in Parisuntil january 26th, 2008

Mark Power was born in Harpenden, England in 1959. His photographs have been exhibited in galleries throughout the world and published in books and numerous magazines.
Mark Power joined Magnum Photos as a Nominee in 2002, became an Associate in 2005, and a full Member in 2007. Meanwhile, in his other life, he is Professor of photography at the University of Brighton, a city on England's south coast where he lives with his partner Jo and their children Chilli (b.1998) and Milligan (b.2002).


Signes / Signs is an exhibition of approximately 60 works from across Mark Power's career at the Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian in central Paris from 15 November until 26 January 2008. Selected by the Portuguese Jorge Calado, 'Signes' is Power's first solo show in Paris.

Geographic Treasures of the Society of Geography at the Bibliothèque nationale de France

Abu Simbel, African horse riders, Japanese SamouraÎ, impressive trees ... Discover at the BnF's Gallery of Photography, photographs from the famous Society of Geography. A testimony to the state of the world and its upheavals in the 19th century, but also the passion for inventory embedded in scholars geographers of the 19th century. A unique collection to see again and again.

The Society of Geography was founded in 1821 in Paris by 217 personalities that made up the scholarly elite of the time. Its establishment and its ambitions are in keeping with a vast enterprise of knowledge and discovery in the world.
The booming of photography, contemporary to the exploration great movement of the second half of the 19th century, makes it possible to refresh the imagination of the Western world for the unknown. Lonely travelers, scientific expeditions, religious, civil or military missions brought back the first images from regions and peoples hitherto ignored to Westerners.

The photographic collections of the Society of Geography, exceptional by their originality, their diversity and remarkable consistency, are a unic source for the history of travels and discoveries in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20thcentury. Spontaneously gathered and then, from 1881, collected and combined into a single fund under the leadership of the librarian James Jackson, these photographs come from foreign and french members but also outside correspondents of the Society: soldiers, diplomats, engineers, explorers and travelers it sponsored.

Robert Adams, On the Edge at The Fondation Cartier to January 27, 2008

Robert Adams’ first solo exhibition in France is presented at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain.


Conceived entirely by him and inspired by his current concerns, this show provides a rare opportunity to discover an artist known for his devotion to the western American landscape. Entitled On the Edge, it showcases approximately one hundred and fifty photographs that reflect both devastating and hopeful visions of the environment from three separate but related series: West from the Columbia (1990-1992), Time Passes (1990-1992), and Turning Back (1999-2003). A look back at his distinguished career via the remarkable publications that have accompanied his photographs since 1970 invites visitors to delve into his lesserknown passion for books as an equally important artistic medium.

Helen Levitt at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation Street Set until December 23rd, 2007

Until December 23rd, the HCB Foundation will be showing a rare collection of black & white and colour images made by the great American photographer Helen Levitt in New York and Mexico between the 1930's and 1980's.
Helen Levitt is one of the great living poets of urban life. Best known for her images of life on the streets of New York in the 1930's and 1940's, her photographs reveal the gentle and subtle expressions and gestures of adults engaged in conversation and children at play in mysterious and inventive ways.

Helen Levitt started her carreer as a photographer in the '30 in New York, the city she loves more than anything else. But she always choosed carefully her playground: Brooklyn, Harlem, Lower East Side, where social misery strikes. Her glaze isn't accusatory. she stares without bias, sensitive to a rampant urban poetry but beyond everything to people crawling everywhere, bringing streets to life et moreover children playing games still innocent. The set is up for ever. Helen levitt won't change it, faithfull to herself et to the society she's depicting tenderly.


Levitt grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Dropping out of school, she taught herself photography while working for a commercial photographer. While teaching some classes in art to children in 1937, Levitt became intrigued with the transitory chalk drawings that were part of the New York children's street culture of the time. She purchased a Leica camera and began to photograph these works as well as the children who made them. The resulting photographs appeared, to great acclaim, in 1987 as In The Street: chalk drawings and messages, New York City 1938–1948. Named as one of the "100 best photo-books", first-editions are now highly collectable.


She studied with Walker Evans 1938 and 1939. In 1943 Edward Steichen at the Museum of Modern Art curated her first solo exhibition, after which she began to find press work as a documentary photographer. In the late 1940s she briefly became a film director, working with James Agee, with whom she shot the short art film In the Street. In 1959 and 1960, she received two Guggenheim Foundation grants to take colour photographs on the streets of New York but much of this work was stolen in a burglary. The remaining photos, and others taken in the following years, can be seen in the book Slide Show: The Color Photographs of Helen Levitt (May 2005). Her first major book was A Way of Seeing (1965). In 1976 she was a Photography Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts.

She has remained active as a photographer for nearly 70 years and still lives in New York City. The New York's "visual poet laureate" is notoriously private and publicity shy.

Albert Watson has made his mark as one 01 the world's most successlul fashion and commercial photographers du ring the last four decades, while creating his own art along the way. Over the years, his striking images have appeared on more than 250 covers of Vogue around the world and have been featured in countless other publications, from Rolling Stone to Time to Vibe many 0f the photographs iconic portraits of rock stars, rappers, actors and other celebrities. [Albert was the officiaL Royal Photographer for Prince Andrew's wedding to Sarah Ferguson!



Albert also has created the photography for hundreds of successfuL advertising campaigns for major corporations, such as the Gap, Levïs, Revlon and Chanel, and he has directed more than 600 TV commercials. All the while, Albert has spent much of his time working on personaL projects, creating stunning images from his travels, from Marrakech to Las Vegas to the Orkneys. Much of this work, along with his well-known portraits and fashion photographs, has been featured in museum and gallery shows around the world. The photo industry bible, Photo District News, named Albert one of the 20 most influentiaL photographers 0f all time.


Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Albert studied graphic design at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, and film and television at the Royal ColLege of Art in London.
Albert was introduced to an art director at Max Factor, who offered him his first session, from which the company bought two shots. Albert"s distinctive style eventually caught the attention of American and European fashion magazines such as Mademoiselle, GQ and Harper's Bazaar, and he began commuting between Los Angeles and New York. ln 1976, ALbert landed his fi rst job for Vogue, and his move to New York in the same year shilted his career into high gear.
Despite the enormous stress from all of his commissioned assignments, Albert devotes much of his time to extensive personaL projects, and he has published two books, "Cyclops" (19941 and "Maroc" (1998], and he is working on a third, "Shot in Vegas,"' due out in 2007. ln addition, many catalogs of Albert's photographs have been published in conjunction with museum and gaLlery shows around the world.
Albert has always been a workaholic. The archives at his studio in Manhattan's West Village are filled with millions 0f images and negatives, on which world-famous magazines and companies can be read. His huge studio, also used as a personal gallery, is filled with extraordinariLy large-format photographs taken in Las Vegas. At first glance these Landscapes, interiors and portraits take the viewer by surprise with their soft, filtered range of colors. But even in his new creations, Albert stays true to himseLf. The photographs create an aura that takes the viewer into the image but simuLtaneously ask for some sort of a distance.
Without a doubt, Albert Watson is an artist who greatly enriches our perception with his unique photographie view. This single-minded commitment to perfection has made Albert one of the world's most sought-after photographers.
